Fact: Every workplace has their own lingo.
Here is something else I know to be true: Sometimes it’s difficult to decipher the meaning of most abbreviations and slang if you’re not familiar with the subculture. Well, every office has a copier, printer or MFP, and the terms we use at Phillips are important to know when deciding what device meets your needs best. So we’ve decided to compile a short list of the most commonly questioned terms in Document Management and some others that are specific to Phillips – enjoy!
ADF – Automatic Document Feeder. This is the tray located on the top of most copiers that feeds documents through the machine to be copied or scanned to another source.
Click – Another word for “copy.”
CMYK – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black. This is the color process that most commercial printers and color copiers use to identify ranges of color. I hear questions about the names of these colors when customers order toner. The color name Cyan is the beautiful blue and Magenta is the red or pink color. And black is abbreviated by the letter K. Hey, I never said this would all make sense.
Collate – This function on your copier arranges print jobs with multiple pages in the correct order, so you can hit Print, pick them up at the copier & be ready to go!
CPM / PPM – Copies per Minute / Pages per Minute. These abbreviations represent your copier’s “speed” or the maximum number of copies that your device is able to output in a single minute.
DSPF – Dual Single Pass Feeder. Quite literally, this automatic feeder reads both sides of a document in a single pass.
ECM – Electronic Content Management. Think of a large electronic filing cabinet stored within your organization’s network. ECM allows user to capture, manage, store & deliver electronic content related to organizational processes.
FMR – Fulling Mill Road. It’s what we like to call our “home base” here at 501 Fulling Mill Road in Middletown, our corporate location.
HDD – Hard Disk Drive. With the evolution of technology, most copiers come with their own hard drive located within the device. It is used for copying print jobs from a network very quickly and then storing them until you are ready to print them.
LCT – Large Capacity Tray. If your organization prints jobs that require frequent re-loading of paper, you want to think about adding the LCT. It is an additional paper drawer that usually stores between 1,000 and 3,000 sheets of paper.
MFP – Multi-Functional Product. MFP is an all-encompassing term for a device that prints, scans, copies & has optional faxing capabilities, hard drive & data security features. They allow groups of users to eliminate single-use printers in favor of higher-speed multi-functional devices.
MNS – Managed Network Services. Although this service has its entire own language, the Phillips MNS team provides technical, network & computer support for organizations without an IT team. We can outfit your organization with all the hardware and software you will need, and then our team of technicians will monitor the day-to-day operations, ensuring your network is ALWAYS available.
PM – Preventative Maintenance. Our award-winning team of Technicians at Phillips is available for your copier’s every need. If we visit your site for an unknown or unclear problem, the technicians will perform different types of Preventative Maintenance to keep your busines up & running.
