Phillips Celebrates its 75th Year in Business

2015 marks Phillips’ 75th year providing office solutions to area businesses. While the name, product offerings, technologies, and workplace settings have changed over the years, one thing has remained constant – office solutions.

The company was started as a typewriter repair business in 1940 by Walter Phillips, called Phillips Equipment Company. At that time, Phillips provided businesses with the latest office technologies of the day, and the resources to maintain them.

In 1984, Walter Phillips sold his company to Thomas Phillips (no relation). Thomas ran the company for a few years before turning over leadership to his sons Peter and David.

In the years following, Phillips has expanded its list of offerings outside the scope of office equipment. In 1989, they became a Steelcase dealership, providing customers with high-end furniture and workplace environment solutions. By this time, Phillips was maintaining three major divisions: Document Management, Workplace Interiors, and Office Products.

Many people remember Phillips from the three retail stores they operated in Carlisle, downtown Harrisburg, and the Carlisle Pike. These stores were closed in 2002 as the company saw a dramatic increase in its online sales of office products. In 2013, Phillips sold its Office Products division to Guernsey Office Products to focus on the growing markets of its other two divisions.

Today, Phillips provides Workplace Interiors and Document Management solutions to businesses in Central PA, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Workplace Interiors focuses on innovative solutions for all work, education, and healthcare environments, while Document Management provides Content Management, I.T. Services, Records Management, Secure Shredding and Total Output Solutions for handling and maintaining an organization’s information.

While Phillips has changed over the course of 75 years its mission of “Enhancing productivity with innovative solutions to everyday workplace challenges” has not.
