It is 2017 and “Millennials,” people born between 1980 and 2000, are making their way into offices all over the world. Most have grown up with constant use of electronics to help complete their everyday tasks. The reliance on these newer electronics makes millennials more minimalistic than previous generations, in the fact that most can do their job with only a laptop and a cellphone.

Interface Pattern by Tile from the World Woven Collection

I believe it was The Big Lebowski that said it best, “That rug really tied the room together.” Words of wisdom, really. Room design extends further than the scope of your furniture. It’s the walls, lighting, architecture, AND flooring. Now, when asking yourself “Is modular carpet right for me?” The answer is, YES! Here are five reasons why it will really tie the room together.

  1. Carpet tiles are innovative. Believe it or not, carpet tile has been around more than 50 years! Manufacturers, like Interface, are continually pioneering new processes for producing environmentally-efficient, quality products that stand up to the wear and tear a floor is subject to.
  2. Modular equals options. Traditional carpet limits you. With tiles, you can mix and match patterns, solids, colors, textures, and shapes. You can cover an entire room, create an area rug or transition from hard flooring to carpet. Carpet tiles can be as traditional or high-design as you’d like, and then easily switched out when you’re tired of how it looks.
  3. Tiles cut down on waste. Have you ever reconfigured an office and noticed all the “bald” spots where people sat or stood day-in and day-out? Rather than rip out an entire flooring system, carpet tiles allow you to selectively refresh the areas that need refreshing. This not only saves on cost, but also decreases the amount of waste created.
  4. Modular carpet works well technology integration. Everyone wants power (and not just the world domination kind - hehe). With modular carpet, you can work with various under-floor power systems to take electrical from the walls to the center of the room without ripping everything up.
  5. Installation is easy. Many modular carpet systems use an adhesive sticker method to install and connect pieces. This thin, plastic square is strong enough to hold a room together, but forgiving enough to provide easy access for selective replacement. Special tools are not required, install moves quickly, in-house staff can easily replace tiles, and no liquid components (like glue) are needed.

So, what’s the next step? Check out our next blog on Modular Carpet Application Ideas!

Uncorporate: The Future of the Workplace

Start-up, foundation, entrepreneurship, small business…these are words we recognize when thinking about the trendy, innovative-focused businesses that don’t encompass a completely traditional business model. How about uncorporation? Does that word mean anything to you? According to the “all-knowing” Wikipedia, “An uncorporation is an unorthodox form of large business organization. The term appears to embrace any unincorporated business. An uncorporation may be formed in an effort to align managers' and owners' interests more closely than in a typical corporation...”

Now do a twitter search for #uncorporate. Besides the derogatory comments about unprofessionalism being coined as “uncorporate” and the free spirits that can’t be tied down to conventional jobs, this tag often leads to posts about developing company cultures, attitudes, and spaces.

The term “mobile” has become somewhat of a nuisance in my opinion. While it allows you to be more flexible, it has affected the work-space balance. Without a proper transition, having employees switch from traditional stations to touchdown stations can be a little rough. Here are some tips for managing hoteling stations:

Your new space is almost complete. For months you have been coordinating with dealers, designers, contractors, and installers about how to layout and outfit your workplace. You’ve taken the time to align electrical with workstations, you’ve made sure that each conference room, desk and quiet area has its own trash receptacle, and you’ve even added some fun upholstery colors to help brighten the space. Everything is on track until you get the question, “Um…where do I go?”

Shoot! Here it is…the sign you’ve missed something. The ironic part is, you forgot about SIGNAGE! Not only are people missing name tags; rooms aren’t labeled, restrooms are ambiguous, and to top it off, the company name is missing from the lobby. Deep breath – this is a commonly overlooked detail that can easily be amended. Here is a quick list of areas and applications you can refer to in order to start a conversation with your Workplace Interiors expert:

The workstation accessory is often overlooked when remodeling or furnishing a workspace. I’m not talking about pictures of your kids, figurines from your favorite sports team or your stapler.
